Coachella: Chromeo comes outside to play

Who: Chromeo at the Outdoor Theatre
In 3 or Fewer Words: ’80s-sounding wiseguys are.
I’ll Remember This Until: The next time Hall and Oates play the Hollywood Bowl. Other than the Chemical Brothers, Chromeo is about as close as Coachella gets to having a resident band. That’s because their own formula and the festival itself have lots in common: They’re both ultra-hip, but the amount of winking involved to prove that they’re actually “ironic” as well can be nearly seizure-inducing. Though Chromeo has been in tents the last couple times they’ve played, the Outdoor Theatre ended up being the perfect venue for their dance-happy version of kinda-ironic, kinda-ecstatic ’80s revivalism, with a set that was only enhanced by a guest appearance from Vampire Weekend’s Ezra Koenig – both singing and playing saxophone (who knew?)
What I’d Tell My Friends Who Were Watching The Strokes: At least I could dance freely without a teenage girl in a cut-off T-shirt looking at me in disgust.
