There haven’t been many rags-to-riches stories in recent years like Seattle’s the Head and the Heart. They’ve gone from playing open-mic nights and selling 10,000 copies of their self-released, self-titled debut by word-of-mouth during 2009 to joining Sub Pop’s roster and premiering their latest single, “Lost in My Mind,” on national television last week. The folk-pop collective has quickly mastered the one-step-at-a-time model – they just happen to be taking very large steps. Their music is notable for its big sing-along choruses, arching melodies and the rich harmonies of Josiah Johnson, Jon Russell and Charity Thielen. There is also a nice balance between the vocals and Kenny Hensley’s light yet substantial contributions on the keys, along with Tyler Williams’ driving percussion and Chris Zasche’s bass lines. All their hard work has been remastered and is currently available on Sub Pop, but it will be interesting to hear what they come up with next.

I am a child of the 70’s and the Head and the Heart provide a sound reminescent
of those days. Good lyrics, great sound, foot stomping, and wanting to hear it again. I predict great things for the group – Baby Boomers will appreciate it!
