If there’s anyone who does acoustic melancholy properly with depth and sincerity, it’s doe-eyed Irish artist Conor O’Brien. After the demise of his former band, the Immediate, O’Brien went on to release music under the moniker Villagers and the reception has been positive with 2009’s “Becoming a Jackal” (released on Domino Records) earning a shortlist nomination for the Mercury Prize. Although The xx claimed the title, Villagers’ sweeping romanticism balanced between dark lyrics and gentle arrangements has continued to keep O’Brien’s songwriting in the soft spotlight. Their new Myles O’Reilly-directed video does a nice job of collecting classic black and white shots of him playing with his full band to accompany the lilting tempos of “The Pact (I’ll Be Your Fever.)”
