News bits: FYF Fest, Sunset Strip Music Festival to announce lineups on Wednesday, and guess which one rumors have Social Distortion playing?

When worlds collide? The FYF Fest and the Sunset Strip Music Festival each will announce their lineups on Wednesday, and the rumor mill is churning with names. Let’s put our ears to the ground:

‣ Even without having announced a lineup, FYF had a $30 presale on Tuesday and sold out of that allotment. Regular tickets ($35) go on sale Friday for the Sept. 3 event – which promoter Sean Carlson said Tuesday via Twitter will be held “in a new location in downtown L.A.” The notoriously poorly run event had been held at Los Angeles State Historic Park. Even more interesting is that FYF is now working with Goldenvoice in mounting the festival, so maybe those 45-minute waits for a bottle of water are a thing of the past.

So who’s playing? Carlson engaged in a guess-the-lineup game via Twitter this week and nobody deduced the full lineup. There are 39 bands (according to one of his clues), and unconfirmed rumors I hear are they they include Explosions in the Sky, Guided By Voices, Fool’s Gold and … punk-rock drum roll, please … Social Distortion. Discuss among yourselves.

‣ Will this year’s Sunset Strip Music Fest honorees Mötley Crüe have anything to say about the SSMF lineup tonight at their Hollywood Bowl show? How about “we’re playing.” Each of the past two years, SSMF honorees (Slash and Ozzy) have performed, so it makes sense that the L.A. metal gods would headline. Beyond them? Well, Uriah Heep, the Veronicas, Dredg and Buckcherry have already been tabbed for club shows Aug. 18-19, but nothing for the Aug. 20 street fest on Sunset Boulevard has been announced. Don’t be surprised if Bush is one of the big names – the ’90s rock stalwarts announced their new album “The Sea of Memories” is coming in September, and their Facebook page implored fans to watch for a show announcement Wednesday morning.

Among local bands, the SSMF lineup has rarely offered much in the way of surprises. Some of L.A. better hard rockers – such as Sabrosa Purr, Dead Sara and Indians – are likely to be playing the indoor stages (Key Club, Roxy, Whisky and Cat Club), along with the usual cast of Sunset Strip bands who live the cliché.
