On Saturday evening, Medina was onstage in front of around 50,000 people at the Roskilde Festival, performing one of her beloved-abroad hits, “You & I,” with Deadmau5 (the pair had success in England and beyond with his remix of the track two years ago). Tonight, the Danish singer/songwriter, who has been making international waves lately in both dance and pop music circles, makes her Los Angeles debut in an under-promoted stealth club gig at Exchange LA. Make no mistake: Medina is no run-of-the-mill dance diva … This is an artist who writes her own music (as well as for others) and many put her on par with better-known performers such as Robyn. Medina’s sold well across the Atlantic for label partners such as EMI Germany, Parlaphone in the UK as well as at home, where the emotionally resonant voice well-known to Danes propelled 2009’s “Welcome To Medina” to quadruple platinum status. But the soulful singer who knows how to work a beat is just getting started in the States, so expect a teaser set tonight for significantly less than 50,000 (still, she’ll be well worth seeing). The video for the recent single “Addiction” was shot in our own backyard – everywhere from Venice to the rooftop of downtown’s Standard Hotel.
