Ears Wide Open: Terraplane Sun

The indie blues of L.A. quintet Terraplane Sun are generations removed from the Delta, but on the quintet’s second album “Coyote” you can feel a little bit of the swamp, as filtered through five guys who’ve explored everything from classic rock to “Pet Sounds” to Motown and who call the beach their home. The band’s harmonica-, mandolin- and accordion-flavored tunes are anchored by the boyish vocals of Ben Rothbard; he and bandmates Johnny Zambetti, Lyle Riddle, Cecil and Cabe Feenberg have seen their songs creep into a lot of TV shows (Showtime’s “Nurse Jackie” and A&E’s “Relapse,” to name two), and even though music of Terraplane Sun’s ilk proliferates on L.A.’s Eastside, the band proudly makes Venice its home base. “The ocean doesn’t have to be associated with Jack Johnson,” Rothbard says. “It’s not all sunshine and potato chips. It has somewhat of an edge to it.”
