The downloads have spoken – or, at least, the fans who clicked “download” have. Four L.A.-area artists – alternative rockers Starving for Gravity, singer-composer Lucas Thanos and songstresses Stacy Clark and Marina V have advanced to the semifinals of the Pop Up Live program, a project from SPIN, the snack company popchips and Reverbnation to expose emerging artists. Theirs were the most-downloaded songs in the first stage of a five-city nationwide competition that eventually will send a winner to Austin in March to perform at a SPIN event concurrent with SXSW.

Next up for those artists (and the semifinalists from New York, Chicago, San Francisco and Seattle): Each will stage a “pop-up” show for their fans, documenting the event on film. The video will be submitted to a panel of judges, with the winner pocketing $1,000 and advancing the national semifinals.
