The three-day Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival Sept. 30-Oct. 2 at Speedway Meadow in Golden Gate park had more than its share of highlights: M. Ward came out with Conor Oberst and did a Monsters of Folk cover; Amy Millan of Stars came out with Broken Social Scene to do “Anthems for a Seventeen Year Old Girl;” Kris Kristofferson went solo before bringing out Merle Haggard (they did an awesome cover of “Folsom Prison Blues”); Fitz & the Tantrums pleased the crowd with a cover of  “Steady As You Go,” then even got the entire audience to get down to the ground during “Moneygrabber.” The fest was far more crowded (and the lineup more diverse) than August’s Outside Lands at Golden Gate Park, and it was free. Photographer Carl Pocket sent along this gallery.
