Stream: The Jealous Sound, ‘Your Eyes Were Shining’

More than eight years after their last proper release, the Jealous Sound is back. There’s probably a novel to be written about what transpired with the L.A. quartet between releasing their 2003 emo-pop masterpiece (yes, it’s that good) “Kill Them With Kindness” and their 2009 reunion to tour with Sunny Day Real Estate. But fast-forward to the latest chapter: The Jealous Sound has finished a new album, “A Gentle Reminder,” for release in January. And the band – founders Blair Shehan and Pedro Benito, along with bassist Nate Mendel (the Foo Fighters, SDRE) and drummer Bob Penn (Coco B’s) – plan to tour behind it. The foursome’s work has always been characterized by sweet melodies, Shehan’s soul-wrenching lyrics and Benito’s crackling guitar work, and the first single is no exception. For many – especially fans who knew Shehan in the ’90s with Knapsack – “Kill Them With Kindness” represented a zenith in the golden age of emo (before it became a bad word). It sounds as if the Jealous Sound has picked up where it left off.
