Ears Wide Open: Tiff Randol

New York-bred, L.A.-based songstress Tiff Randol makes sticky sweet pop songs with a chewy wryness and a thin frosting of soul. Randol’s myriad song placements in film, television and commercials testify to her ability to tap into the universal both melodically and thematically, but her new mini-album, “Strangely Familiar,” was cast in a different light this week after the death, during childbirth, of her friend and fellow songwriter Michal the Girl. The album deals whimsically and poignantly with the need to cling to things that are near and dear even as modern life seduces you with everything “new.” Randol has composed a nice tribute to her friend, and the husband and twin babies she left behind, on her Bandcamp page. Good reading while you warm your hands on that comfy cup of coffee.
