Video: The Darcys, ‘Josie’ (from their cover of the full Steely Dan album ‘Aja’)

I was pretty sure I’d hate this, but I don’t. The Darcys, a four-piece art-rock band from Toronto, in January released their interpretation of Steely Dan’s 1977 classic “Aja” for free download. Like their self-titled album released last year (produced by Murray Lightburn of the Dears), the Darcy’s “Aja” is noisy, brooding and dense. Yes, the currently cool production blankets of heavy synth and reverb threaten to smother the project, but they don’t.  And the video for “Josie,” directed by Aaron Miller, is compelling in its own right.
