White Arrows, “Fireworks of the Sea” – It’s been a while since we’ve heard something new from Mickey Church and the gang, and for good reason. Following the success of their self-titled EP and the remix EP which followed, White Arrows are getting to release their full-length. Inspired by the popularity of RAC’s remix of “Coming or Going,” the quintet asked the Portland remixers to produce the entire album which already shows promise. Right behind the first single, “Get Gone,” the title track off of their forthcoming EP “Fireworks of the Sea” via Votiv music is a prismatic combination of both organic and electronic arrangements that cushion Church’s crooning. White Arrows follow up their batch of SXSW dates with a show March 27 at the Roxy.
Raw Geronimo, “Role Play” – After last year’s “Faustine” 7-inch, Laena Geronimo (aka Laena Myers-Ionita) returns with the playful single “Role Play.” The A-side track (with the B-side being “Shot On the Spot”) coos as much as it turns pop-punk on its psychedelic side with zig-zagged song structure. The ’70s glam and ’50s rock and roll echo her most recent work with Dante Vs Zombies more than her contributions to experimental group Swahili Blonde or the bright pop of the Like, but nonetheless swings with the expected DIY swagger. Raw Geronimo plays Lot 1 Cafe tonight, then heads to SXSW, followed by a show March 26 at the Echo with Black Flamingo and Young Hunting.

The New Limb, “Refugees” – It’s taken a long time for New Limb to come back around to us. Their “Sound People Can Hear” EP gave us sweet harmonies in songs like “Birds and Stuff” in 2010, and they’re finally giving us a taste of what their debut record will offer. After their move from Orange County to Echo Park, the New Limb is ready to wrap up their studio time and offer “Refugees,” a warm pop concoction sprinkled with more of those back to back boy-girl duets. We thought their “Bizarre Love Triangle/Time After Time” mash-up was cool, but new songs with new layers are the sweetest. The New Limb follow up SXSW dates with a show March 26 at Silverlake Lounge with Monte Mar and Francisco the Man.
