Coachella 2012: Mazzy Star, twinkling in the night

1

Who: Mazzy Star at the Outdoor Theater
In 3 or Fewer Words: The genuine article.
Memorable Because: Perhaps no returning / reunited artist at Coachella has had her schtick appropriated by current indie-poppers more than Hope Sandoval, a forerunner of the hazy, dreamy, reverb-drenched paean to love and longing. Plenty of those followers have game, too, so it was interesting to see Mazzy Star return recently with new music ā€“ which although it does nothing to shame the band’s legacy does nothing to advance it either. So Mazzy Star’s turn at the Outdoor Theater was more an exercise in time travel, with “Ghost Highway” providing a badly need jolt of energy and “Fade Into You” inspiring more slow dances than a high school prom.
What Iā€™d Tell My Friends Who Were at the Rapture: 2003, meet 1993.
