Coachella 2012: Bon Iver, folk on a whole new level

Who: Bon Iver on the main stage
In 3 or Fewer Words: Kanye chose well.
Memorable Because: For his first Coachella performance under his Bon Iver guise (rather than singing background for Kanye West, as he did last year), Justin Vernon delivered a scorcher, much needed after a day of like-minded folkies getting, well, like-mindedly folky. Instead, on deep-cut songs like “Perth” and “Madison, WI”, Vernon expanded rather than contracted his airy, emotional world, allowing room for guitar runs and horn swells as well as his own falsetto beauty.
What I Would Tell My Friend Who Was At Flying Lotus: You danced, but I cried.
