Who: Fitz & the Tantrums on the main stage
In 3 or Fewer Words: Soul mates.
Memorable Because: In square footage, the Coachella main stage is bigger than a lot of clubs the breakout L.A. band while paying its dues – certainly bigger than the Satellite, where Fitz did a residency less than two years ago. “I had no idea how big it was until I ran out the edge,” singer Michael Fitzpatrick said after his band’s happy-hour dance party. “Then I realized, ‘Oh shit, I have to make it all the back to my mark.'” Fitz and compatriot Noelle Scaggs got the Coachellans dancing, and saxophonist James King typically stole the spotlight a couple times as the band’s buoyant, guitar-less songs recalled the days of AM radio soul. They debuted a new song, “She’s Out of My League,” and interjected a jaunty cover of “Steady As She Goes” as fans showed that Santigold’s equally feel-good set didn’t leave their legs too weary.
What I’d Tell My Friends Who Were at Beats Antique: You saw better choreography, but we’re both in a happy place.
