Coachella 2012: Florence + the Machine, sparkling

Who: Florence + the Machine at the Outdoor Theatre
In 3 or Fewer Words: Night’s dark dove.
Memorable Because: Even if you couldn’t hear Florence Welch belt out her first note, you could tell the set had started when the lights flared up, revealing a set designed to resemble the inside of a church with stained-glass windows. Of course, the lighting on stage wasn’t the only theatrical aspect to Florence + the Machine’s headlining set on the other side of the field. While At the Drive-In had already started, fans at the Outdoor Theatre wouldn’t have noticed if any sound had bled over. Too intoxicated and under a spell as soon as “Only For a Night” began, the crowd hysterically swooned for the dramatically gothic singer in her flowing blue dress. When she would twirl on her tip-toes in the blue lighting, she would have completely blended in if it hadn’t been for her flame-red hair. With one raise of her arm, Welch almost seemed to swoop over the audience like a graceful (dark) dove with peace and happiness for all. This was especially apparent when the barefoot British singer ran from side to side on stage and jumped up and down during “Shake It Out” and “Dog Days Are Over.” An immaculate show from start to end, visually and audio-wise, Florence + the Machine was a magical time. The live and sparkling harp was the cherry on top.
What I’d Tell My Friends Who Were at DJ Shadow: Sorry that I missed Zack de la Rocha’s cameo.
