Now stream this: Elle King, the Mynabirds, Nikki Lane

[Three feisty female-led tracks that have come across our radar…]

Elle King, “Playing For Keeps” – Elle King’s gutsy sound is Brooklyn meets Nashville meets Detroit. Her gritty soulful voice glides and halts as it pleases over rock arrangements boasting banjo and guitar, and she’s currently on tour with big name artists such as Of Monsters and Men and Train. But the originality on her forthcoming debut EP (out June 12 on Fat Possum Records) just might be leaving both those bands in the dust.

The Mynabirds, “Generals” – Laura Bruhenn and her band finally follow up 2010’s “What We Lose in the Fire We Gain in the Flood” with the record “Generals.” Although she’s teamed up with producer Richard Swift again, Bruhenn’s songs strut and stomp instead of serenade this time around. That’s what happens when one writes a protest and concept album, though. Stemming from the songwriter’s political frustrations, the title track roars with a rawness the Mynabirds have never had before. “Generals” is out June 3 on Saddle Creek.

Nikki Lane, “Down to the Wire” – Although a little more country and a little more old-fashioned, Nikki Lane has proved she’s just as boisterous as any of the other girls in this bunch. Her album “Walk of Shame” (out now on IAMSOUND) is full of sass reminiscent of Nancy Sinatra and friendliness similarly found in Dolly Parton. She’ll be hitting the road with Spiritualized this month and stopping by the Wiltern on May 22.
