Download: Beachwood Sparks, ‘Sparks Fly Again’

See if this makes sense: Beachwood Sparks were ahead of their time at going back in time. When the quartet first emerged in 2000 with a self-titled album, it marked a revival of the cosmic California folk of Gram Parsons, and that release and 2001’s “Once We Were Trees” proved worthy additions to that music’s lineage. More than a decade later, the original members – guitarist Chris Gunst, bassist Brent Rademaker, multi-instrumentalist Farmer Dave Scher and drummer Aaron Sperske – have reconvened for “The Tarnished Gold,” their first album in 11 years (due June 26 via Sub Pop). Recent years have seen bands big and small turn to the gently twangy, harmony-laden folk of Parsons’ era. Few do it so well as Beachwood Sparks. Produced by Thom Monahan, the new album features contributions from Ben Knight, Dan Horne, Neal Casal, Jimi Hey, Jen Cohen, Darren Rademaker and Ariel Pink. “Sparks Fly Again” indeed.
