Ears Wide Open: Heroes & Heroines

Got a wad of Bazooka in my mouth so big my jaw hurts. Left hand smells like leather, from wearing my ball glove all day, and my right smells like sugar, from the bubble gum. I’m cruising Corrington Avenue – ’cause that’s where this pretty girl with the straight brown hair Nancy lives – on my purple metallic Sting-Ray. Banana seat, sissy bar and everything. Cost me a lot of my paper route profits. Got my almost-new Arrow Solid State radio slung over the handlebars by its wrist strap, blaring WIRL 1290. Dang, it’s hot. And if the DJ plays that White Plains song one more time, I’m gonna scream. Then this California band comes on, Heroes & Heroines. Saw their 45 at the record store last week. No girls in the band, so I don’t know where they’re getting the “Heroines” part, but it’s a pretty good song. Sounds like an oldie. Think I’ll pick it up.
