If DJ Screw produced for Death Row circa ’93, it would sound like Florida native SpaceGhostPurrp. Somewhat of a surprise was his signing to 4AD, not really known as a haven for rap. Nevertheless, his debut full-length, “Mysterious Phonk: The Chronicles of SpaceGhostPurrp” is a syrupy odyssey into the mind of this 21-year-old. “No Evidence” is the first single, as well as the longest track on this effort – clocking in a few hairs over seven minutes. It’s a prime display of Purrp’s mesmerizing production and flow, highlighting his retro yet present rhythmical sense. “Mysterious Phonk” is a small beacon of hope for Florida, a state currently marred by flesh-eating druggies and over-zealous neighborhood watchmen. SpaceGhostPurrp is one of the best things to come out of the state since Tony Montana and booty bass.
