Video: Michael Andrews, ‘Bubbles in Space’ Kevin Bronson on July 23rd, 2012 Share this:Tweet Click to email a link to a friend (Opens in new window) Email 0 Michael Andrews has gained a reputation as a film composer and producer – first earning notoriety for his collaboration with Gary Jules on a cover of Tears for Fears’ “Mad World” and then going on to work on the movies “Donnie Darko,” “Me and You and Everyone We Know,” “Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story” and myriad others. He’s collaborated with the likes of Van Dyke Parks, Inara George, Metric and Brendan Benson. But his solo work – his 2000 album under the name “Elgin Park” and 2005’s “Hand on String” are the stuff of lost classics. Andrews’ guitar pop isn’t quite like anybody else’s, and on his new solo album “Spilling a Rainbow” (due Aug. 14 on Everloving) he draws from his recent new fatherhood for songwriting inspiration. Full of whimsy and wonder, “Spilling a Rainbow” overflows with melody and imagery that could melt the hardest of hearts. Josh Hassin’s animated video for “Bubbles in Space” is equally captivating – the flipbook-style clip comprises 3,000 frames hand-drawn by from San Diego’s High Tech High International, all conceived from footage Hassin and Andrews filmed with their children. ||| Live: Michael Andrews brings back his “The Open Mike Andrews” residency nights every Wednesday in August at the Bootleg Bar.
