Your Friday fun:

Salem and IO Echo do the first of the Play MOCA music/art series at the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA in downtown L.A.
‣ Pop harmonies for lunch? If you work downtown, you can catch Lady Danville at noon as part of the Grand Performances series at California Plaza.
Z-Trip holds forth at Control at Avalon Hollywood.
‣ Sub Pop label mates King Tuff and Jaill bring their raucous garage rock to the Echo.
‣ Big night at the Hotel Cafe, with Cary Brothers, Harper Blynn, Madi Diaz teaming up for one show and Mind the Gap minding the late slot.
‣ And the annual power-pop festival International Pop Overthrow kicks off 10 days worth of shows at Molly Malone’s, where mod-pop forerunners the Records featuring John Wicks – often compared with good reason to Big Star back in their late-’70s/early ’80s heyday – head up a lineup that features Linus Of Hollywood, the Names featuring Dave Galluzzo, Seth Swirsky, Peachfuzz and more.
‣ And it’s “Global Fusion Night” in the annual Music at the Zoo series at the Los Angeles Zoo. From 6 to 9 p.m. bands such as the Rocky Neck Bluegrass Band, Marieve Herington Band, Paddy’s Pig, Wicked Tinkers, AK and Her Kalashnikovs, Bandidos de Amor, Tropical Punch, Shaya and Rafi, and Kenny Hudson and World Beat serenade the animals staying up past their bedtimes, and humans getting close to theirs.
