Download: Allah-Las, ‘Don’t You Forget It’

The “Nuggets” boxed sets are more fun than this. Really. The exploration of 1960s surf-rock by the Los Angeles quartet Allah-Las feel like a laboratory experiment. They’ve nailed the sound, perfected the vibe and aced the test – much in the same way pop genius Todd Rundgren did in 1980 with his recombinant Beatles chords on his Utopia album “Deface the Music.” Allah-Las’ debut album, out Sept. 18 on Innovative Leisure, was produced by Nick Waterhouse, a fellow lab-rat whose time travels take him to an earlier era. It’s all good that Allah-Las have brought this sound back around, and maybe it’ll inspire kids to dive into their dads’ (or granddads’) vinyl. But in the big picture, the Allah-Las’ debut is to art what Civil War reenactments are to battle.
