Post-Britpop trio Animal Kingdom has been making waves with their latest album “The Looking Away” (out now on Boombox and Mom+ Pop) with shimmering songs like “Strange Attractor.” Produced by David Kosten (Bat For Lashes), the record follows up their highly regarded 2009 debut “Signs and Wonders” (produced by Phil Ek, who’s worked with Fleet Foxes and the Shins, among others) with soaring synth-heavy alt-rock tunes saturated with heavy lyrics. Stemming from devastatingly beautiful ballads like “Chalk Stars” on the last album, Animal Kingdom carries over the atmospherics but expands their sound palette. Falsetto-laden harmonies and vigorous guitar and percussion build-ups go well with the Ben Strebel-directed video. It’s a chemical love song and we can see that as the technicolor visuals are in slow motion before the final embrace.
