Stream: Future Islands, ‘Tomorrow’

“What’s a man to do/When a man can’t be true?” Samuel T. Herring croons on the new Future Islands single. Always theatrical but never cliché, the Baltimore post-punk dance trio teases us with the soulful “Tomorrow.” Although there is no word on a full-length follow-up to their highly regarded album, “On the Water,” the dichotomy of Herring’s Otis Redding (by-way-of-Meatloaf)-like vocals and high-decibel snarls provide more than enough grit on this new synth-pop ballad. Doo-wop harmonies provided by Jenn Wasner (Wye Oak) and Lexie Mountain also offer a new lush backdrop. It’s a toned-down Future Islands, but the emotions certainly haven’t lost their intensity. “Tomorrow” will be released Sept. 3 with “Fountain” as the B-side on Upset the Rhythm.
