Ears Wide Open: Glass Theory

1

A more danceable Depeche Mode? Bring it on. “Hang Up” is the debut EP from Glass Theory, the project of L.A.-based producer Jack Duff, who is exploring a more sensual side of EDM while continuing the proud tradition of cascading ’80s synths tamed by a commanding vocalist. With “Hang Up,” Duff aspires to create dark, sexy electronica. Sexy, yes, but even with heavy use of haunting 8-bit noises and dark synths, Duff never quite ventures into the darker chiptune territory covered by Crystal Castles, or on to Johnny Jewel’s creepy, comatose Italo disco dancefloor.  Instead, electo-pop fun, with the New Wave glamor of the B-52’s, and every bit as infectious and uplifting as Hercules and Love Affair, if at times a tad lyrically obvious.
