Jens Lekman has never been one to hide his emotions, and that may be one of the most compelling things about him as a performer. His combination of wry humor and stark gloom gives the Swedish indie-popper’s confessionals a sense of melodrama and melancholy few contemporaries approach. Lekman’s previous single “Erica America” prompted one to wonder if he’d been taking happy pills, and the title track off of “I Know What Love Isn’t” (out now on Secretly Canadian) is indeed sunnier, in Lekman’s own way. Self-deprecation is still prominent, but the simple rhymes are more lighthearted and, this time, Mark Soderland (who also directed “Erica America”) gives us a single-shot video with the emphasis in a white room.
