San Francisco-based Pixel Memory have a deep appreciation for the post-disco golden age, a time of diminishing BPMs and evil synthesizers. The trio of Lisa Greyson, Austin Fraser and Joe Gray fell in love with the city’s haunting, after-hours club scene where this rich form of electronica was being revitalized and further explored. A fortuitous turn of events led them to studio expert Mark Pistel, (a current member of Hercules and Love Affair and Meat Beat Manifesto). Hercules and Love Affair have proved to be more than proficient in the reviving and retrofitting of classic disco music, so Pistel’s guidance (and extensive arsenal of vintage synths) was invaluable. The result is Pixel Memory’s debut EP, a five track collection, with the third and final single being “2501”, a liv- recorded, synth-driven dance track where vocalist Greyson masters the sensual wail of Debbie Harry or Kate Bush. Clearly influenced by the litany of pioneers including Joy Division, New Order and Depeche Mode, “2501” is an uplifting dance track with an ice-cold chill, a difficult balancing act consistently achieved by the Knife, feels effortless for Pixel Memory as well. Also foreboding, while never feeling heavy or overwhelming, is “Guardian”, an impressive synth-driven track, and the sensual “Night Colors.”
