Doing business as the Ruby Suns, Ryan McPhun’s gorgeous variations on psych-pop have progressed, incrementally, from his Beach Boys homage some seven years ago to two world music-informed albums for Sub Pop, 2008’s “Sea Lions” and 2010’s “Fight Softly.” McPhun first appeared on our radar in 2008, a Ventura-reared kid who used his dual citizenship to escape California for the better musical climate of New Zealand. A lot has happened since; most recently he parted ways with his girlfriend and bandmate and, eventually, his adopted homeland. He relocated to Oslo, Norway, and wrote the Ruby Suns’ fourth album, “Christopher” (due Jan. 29 n Sub Pop). It’s produced by Chris Coady (Beach House, Zola Jesus, Cold Cave, Smith Westerns), and judging from the slick synths on the first single, as icy as a Scandinavian winter.
