Ears Wide Open: Soviet Red

“There’s music in my head where conversation used to be,” Jaysun Rickards wrote on Facebook a couple of weeks ago. And while you could argue that music is a conversation, it’s a good thing we can overhear what he’s saying as Soviet Red. Rickards moved to L.A. about three years ago from Idaho and has been playing a couple local bands, including up-and-comers James Supercave and Vs. Colour. But Soviet Red is an outlet for his solo explorations, and his second EP “Transient Desire” mixes acoustic music and effects-laden electronica in fever-dream fashion, at times recalling the subversive whimsy of fellow L.A. experimentalist David Shane Smith and at others simply embracing the spirit of a guy who is fine with having a conversation with himself.
