Video: Cold Specks, ‘Hector’

I wouldn’t recommend watching this Cold Specks clip for “Hector” during lunch, but its subtly gruesome storyline plays off of Al Spx’s unflinchingly raw songwriting rather well. The track off the 23-year-old’s debut album “I Predict a Graceful Expulsion” is one of her many arrangements that are dubbed as “doom soul,” and the video’s nuance is a clever take on Spx and her band’s ability to embrace such beauty and somberness at once. Not all of her songs can soundtrack visuals featuring a zombie bride and her decapitated groom, but it encourages one to take note of the emotional depth in Spx’s repertoire.
