[Maybe it’s because of the recent deluge of covers, including the Record Company’s great EP, Seven Saturdays’ take on the Cure and the songs on the New Limb’s mixtape, but today we were reminded that Buzz Bands LA has a lot of nifty cover songs in the queue. Here we share three – I’ll have three more for you tomorrow.]
Nite Jewel, “P.Y.T” – Thirty years ago today, Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” was released. L.A. songstress Ramona Gonzalez, aka Nite Jewel, released a drop-dead over of “P.Y.T. (Pretty Young Thing)” two days ago that’s becoming the toast of the interwebs, with good reason. Nite Jewel’s album “One Second of Love” came out earlier this year on Secretly Canadian.
The Dead Ships, “When I Go Away” – Recording earlier this year at the Rocking Out Cancer benefit, the garage-rock duo-turned-trio takes on the Larry Campbell-penned song that appeared on Levon Helm’s Grammy-winning album “Electric Dirt.” Pin a star on this one. No download available, but maybe they’ll play it one of the Mondays this month during their residency at the Echo.
Wanderhouse, “Light” – In June we introduced Wanderhouse, the collaboration between singer Marie Moreshead and producer Doctor Rosen Rosen (who also works with Meg Myers). Her take on Ellie Goulding’s “Lights” is feverishly good.
