Don’t let the name fool you. Asian She’s members don’t consist of any females nor does the band consist of anyone with Asian ancestry. And before you jump the gun, there’s also no kabuki imagery going on here. However, Noah and Lebenzon and Thomas Froggatt do create a refreshing sound with ominous twists and turns befitting a theatrical show. The two, who have been acquaintances since 1998, have only recently started to collaborate, but their melodic union has yielded intriguing results. A dark amalgamation of hip-hop, shoegaze and pop, their first self-titled EP features songs like the psychedelic “Horrific Nightmare” and the grim yet beat-driven “6:17.” Know a “Donnie Darko” type looking for a band to soundtrack his life? Asian She can do it.
