Ears Wide Open: Toy Bombs

3

Maybe moving from Provo, Utah, to L.A. three years ago affected their outlook on life, but Toy Bombs are calling their forthcoming release “Apocalypse.” The band – originally a meeting of the minds and instruments of Cole Barnson and Brandon McBride – makes prickly indie blues that doesn’t sacrifice pop hooks and isn’t short on attitude. Originally known as Kid Theodore upon their arrival on the West Coast, Toy Bombs has evolved into a foursome and is working on recording and financing “Apocalypse,” which is being made with producer/engineer Danny Kalb (Ben Harper, et al). Their four-song “Will Work for Free” EP was energetic but all over the map stylistically, but there are more reason to think “Apocalypse” is just a beginning for Toy Bombs, and not an end.
