The first two songs from new L.A. quintet DEBT are giving me fits trying to figure out exactly to whom they are indebted, but maybe the fake time stamp on their possibly fake band photograph will help me out … Husker Dü? “Slack Motherf*cker”-era Superchunk? Tsunami? Whatever the songs’ lineage, the Palisades-bred fivesome of Spencer Lewin, Wyatt Bridges, Dylan Bostick, Bennett Kogon and Nicolai Haddal have moved to the head of our garage-rock playlist in under 6 minutes of music. Of their band, they say: “DEBT is a group of childhood friends who like music. DEBT is an acronym, but they haven’t decided what it means yet.” We’ll figure something out.
