The mainstream crowd knows her as Beyoncé’s little sister, and the indie crowd knows her as the hipper Knowles sister who covered this Dirty Projectors hit back in 2009. Although Solange chose her own route as an artist, she had always been waiting in the wings with her background in theatre and dance while her father managed the initial success of Destiny’s Child. In 2002, she released “Feelin’ You, Pt. 2” on his label Music World, but it was five years later that she really broke through with the ’60s soul-influenced record “Sol-Angel & the Hadley St Dreams.” She retains those old-school soundscapes for her latest EP, “True,” a collaborative ’80s R&B pop-laden effort with Dev Hynes (aka Blood Orange, aka Lightspeed Champion). Songs like the lead single “Losing You” have an enchanting balance of hip-house beats and pop melodies, while the EP’s closing track “Bad Girls” displays her seductive concoction of quiet storm and soul. “True” is out now on Terrible, the label run by Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor.

Found it pretty hard to believe The New York Times actually referenced Bessie Smith (of all people) in their Beyonce article this morning. I was waiting for a wardrobe malfunction (anything!) to make it more interesting. This one, on the other hand, swings. Thanks for dropping it. Michael @ Fusion 45.
