Video: Harper Simon, ‘Bonnie Brae’

There are a lot of psych-pop revivalists these days who forget the “pop,” instead settling for slight melodies buried in noodling and reverb. Harper Simon’s new single “Bonnie Brae” is not that. The New York-bred, L.A.-based songwriter, moving away from the amiable Americana on his 2009 debut, engages in some sonic crate-digging on his new album “Division Street.” Maybe he stumbled across some Rain Parade, or Three O’Clock, or Dukes of Stratosphear? Power up the jangle, full speed ahead. The 40-year-old songwriter’s new album, out March 26, was produced by Tom Rothrock (Elliott Smith, Beck, et al) and features a host of A-list players, including Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello), Nikolai Fraiture (the Strokes), Inara George, Brian LeBarton (Beck, Feist), Nate Walcott (Bright Eyes) and Mikael Jordensen (Wilco). The video for the song was filmed in Oklahoma City by George Salisbury, who’s done visuals for fhe Flaming Lips. We are not surprised.
