If Hanni El Khatib fans were happy to hear a preview of new track “Can’t Win ‘Em All” during the Super Bowl, they’re most likely deliriously giddy about the first official single off of “Head in the Dirt.” Picking right up from his California skate rat days, Khatib – who proved the guns did, indeed, come out when his debut made both our 2011 year-end lists – and his scuzzy track, “Family” roars as if he had been shot from a canon straight into your headphones. Although Khatib sings of a sentimental subject, the guitar has never relayed his bad boy attitude so ferociously. If the record turns out to be more than garage-rock a little more than garage-soul this time around, it’s because he’s teamed up with the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach. “Head in the Dirt” is out April 30 on Innovative Leisure.
