Who: Allen Stone in the Gobi Tent
In 3 or Fewer Words: Bet you’ve never seen this before: Band’s bassist arrives onstage alone and lays down a groove; guitarist joins in, followed by the drummer, organist, keyboardist and two-man horn section, slowly building the momentum. Then the soul man himself appears, beseeching the crowd to reach for the stage and wiggle their fingers, and then put their hands above their hands and clap. Stone’s fans were more than happy to oblige, the goofy-looking, self-professed “hippie with soul” using every trick in the vernacular to energize the packed tent. Coachella offered plenty of revivalists this year, but this was a genuine revival – the charismatic 26-year-old from podunksville in Washington state hit impossibly high notes, danced like man possessed, covered Bob Marley and earned response to his every call. Can I get a “Yeah?” Yeah.
What I’d Tell My Friend Who Was At Dropkick Murphys:Â “Celebrate Tonight.”
