Who:Â Sigur Ros at the Outdoor Theatre
In 3 or Fewer Words:Â High-note ambience.
Memorable Because:Â Needed a religious experience in the midst of all the druggies running rampant at Coachella? Closing out the night with Sigur Ros couldn’t have been a better choice if you wanted a true outdoor festival experience, as fans who witnessed similar Coachella sets in 2001 and 2006 could testify. With light bulbs glowing, a horn section and a string section in tow and an actual piano on stage, even songs sung in a made-up language offered an out-of-body experience without any narcotics. It almost became difficult to tell the difference between the violins and Jonsi’s dramatic high notes at one point, and that immaculate blend was a special benefactor. Bowed guitar and haunting harmonies made for an epic showstopper underneath the desert sky.
What I’d Tell My Friends Who Were at Phoenix:Â Sure, R. Kelly gave you something fresh out the kitchen, but he didn’t give you that bump n’ grind.
