Coachella 2013: James Blake, shapeshifting

Who:Â James Blake in the Mojave Tent
In 3 or Fewer Words:Â Yawn.
Not memorable because:Â Wearing a plain gray T-shirt at his keyboard, James Blake looked like that shy skinny boy who stared at you in class but never asked you out. And if you ask me, a man who doesn’t have a pair to do that won’t be doing anything special for you anytime soon. Now I don’t actually know if Blake has been a wallflower or a ladies man, but I’m sure his current popularity status has bolstered his self-esteem either way. Combining dubstep and soul, Blake rose to fame through his deconstructed cover of Feist’s “Limit to Your Love,” but that rendition and his new single “Retrograde” were the only songs worth any interest. The crowd that kept packing it inside the tent apparently thought otherwise, but this blogger felt as if one big sleeping pill was beginning to kick in. It really didn’t take long for his minimalist arrangements and shapeshifted vocals to start sounding like a whale imitating Aaron Neville.
What I’d Tell My Friends Who Were at Social Distortion: I was only there for shelter from the wind.
