Coachella 2013: Vampire Weekend, bringing heat

In 3 or Fewer Words: Surprisingly fun.
Memorable Because: Vampire Weekend got some flak for toting around their Ivy League egos so heavily when they first came out with their self-titled debut, but five years have gone by and their fans are more loyal than ever. All that expensive education did their songwriting some good, and it was undeniable as soon as they opened with that tickling guitar riff from “Cousins.” Ezra Koenig’s playful vocals and the band’s Afro-pop melodies seemed to put festival-goers in a sunny disposition despite the dust in the air and the winds that were picking up. “Everybody brought a sweater right?” Koenig asked. “If you didn’t, this is a good song to move to.” And jump, sway and shimmy the crowd did – especially during favorite hits like “A-Punk” and “Mansard Roof.” Vampire Weekend’s set on the main stage was “Ay-ay-ay-ay!”-OK with me.
What I’d Tell My Friends Who Were at La Roux: People still care about La Roux? Meh.
