The Gibson Amphitheatre, the venue on the Universal Studios lot that has hosted major concerts for more than 40 years, will be shuttered in September to make room for a new attraction at the theme park, promoter Live Nation announced today. A lineup of special farewell shows is planned, the promoters added, noting that concerts planned for after the Gibson’s lease expires this fall will be moved to other venues.
The 6,000-plus capacity theater, originally an outdoor venue known as the Universal Amphitheatre, has hosted a Hall of Fame-worthy roster of artists over the years, as well the annual KROQ Acoustic Christmas series, comedy and special events such as the MTV Music Awards. It has notably been an L.A. concert stop for major Latin artists; in fact, Norteno legend Vicente Fernandez owns the venue’s record with 14 consecutive sellouts and plays there this weekend.
