Rock and Roll Hall of Famers the Rolling Stones will play a surprise show at tonight at the Echoplex. The gig, a warm-up for the band’s “50 And Counting Tour” that kicks off May 3 at Staples Center, was announced today via the GRRRegory Twitter feed, which the band’s official Twitter account retweeted.
Tickets go on sale at 1 p.m. at the El Rey Theatre box office via a random lottery. They cost $20 and there is a limit of one per person. No word on exactly how many tickets would be available.
News of the gig was foreshadowed by GRRRegory on Friday, and then this morning New Build, the Hot Cip/LCD Soundsystem side project originally scheduled to play a Britweek show at the Echoplex, said via their Twitter feed that their show had been bumped to the First Unitarian Church to accommodate the Rolling Stones. As word of the show spread, a line began forming at the El Rey Theatre.
After the jump, the press release:

It was a real disappointment how they ended up deciding who got the tickets. People had been there all morning and it basically worked out that the people at the very back of the line who showed up at noon got to go. They didn’t mix the tickets for the (bullshit) lottery well at all. They should’ve just sold them based on number of tickets and in order of line waiting OR drawn blocks of 50 or 25 numbers and those people could go. As it was, one entire group of people got to go and us towards the front were screwed. Not cool.
