Some may call it vibrato in Laura Stevenson‘s vocals, but that delicate quiver in the Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter’s voice moves one so deeply it’s beyond a technical music term. With every tremble, she picks at her songs’ subject matters until every human flaw is exposed – and this is just one factor that makes her latest record “Wheel” a glorious listen. Whether her lush folk-rock swings in songs such as “Sink, Swim,” struts in “Eleonora” or cradles your emotions in the ballad “L-DOPA,” Stevenson’s lyrics unexpectedly cut so deep you’re left with nothing but a naked vulnerability as a listener. Although much gentler than her past contributions to punk bands such as Bomb the Industry! and Latterman, her songs hit you just as hard – and you feel grateful for having been knocked down before you can get up to see life a little clearer. “Wheel” is out via Don Giovanni Records.
