Video: Cold War Kids, ‘Loner Phase’

Cold War Kids‘ clip for their latest single “Loner Phase” may look like a lyric video on the surface, but the man scribbling behind the screen is actually Matt Maust, who had quite the graphic design portfolio even before he took up bass for the L.A. quartet. If the color combinations and penmanship look familiar, it’s because the band’s previous album artwork on “Mine Is Yours” (and others) is also Maust’s work. The speed in which Maust writes out the lyrics in this video goes in tandem with the urgency in which lead vocalist Nathan Willett sings, with certain words lost in ink when appropriate. If this was meant to be a lyric video, the human touch is what makes it superior to others of its kind. Cold War Kids’ “Dear Miss Lonelyhearts” is out now via Downtown Records.
