Stream: The Greyboy Allstars, ‘Better Get a Jump On It’
If they got into the kitchen more often, the Greyboy Allstars could be top chefs in the funk-soul-jazz world. The long-running ensemble has worked around their individual careers to make four albums in the 20 years since they began boogaloo-ing for San Diego DJ Greyboy back in the 1990s. Their latest concoctions are the mouth-watering grooves of “Inland Emperor,” which was made with virtually the same personnel as the Allstars’ previous work – Karl Denson (horns and vocals), Robert Walter (keyboards), Elgin Park (aka songwriter/composer/producer Michael Andrews, on guitars and vocals) and Chris Stillwell (bass), with Aaron Redfield having replaced original drummer Zak Najor. “Inland Emperor” was made at Andrews’ studio in Glendale and mixed by Grammy-winning producer/engineer Mickey Petralia. Works as well on your dancefloor as it does in your soundtrack.
