Video: Speedy Ortiz, ‘Tiger Tank’

Sadie Dupuis started out in the NYC scene but took off to pursue a master’s in poetry in Northampton, Mass., and in doing so she found her musical calling there. Recording herself under the moniker Speedy Ortiz, Dupuis’ solo lo-fi bedroom project spawned the 5-song EP titled “Sports,” but it didn’t take long for her deranged melodies and cutting wit to find bassist Darl Ferm, guitarist Matt Robidoux and drummer Mike Falcone, transforming Speedy Ortiz into an entirely different endeavor. It was then that the newly-founded quartet really collaborated on what would quickly become ear candy for Pavement and Helium fans. Their debut LP “Major Arcana” is one tasty bowl of grunge, sludge, noise and pop, and it all chaotically spills over with new songs like “Tiger Tank” where Dupuis dangles lyrics such as “My mouth is a factory for every toxic part of speech I spew.” Other singles such as “No Below” and “Plough” also feature that charismatic quiver that is reminiscent to a pre-commercial Liz Phair. Dupuis may be lamenting with lyrics such as “Yeah, you picked a virgin over me,” but she’s got the chops to prove why one loved the ”˜90s. “Major Arcana” was released last week on Carpark Records.
