There’s no doubt that Montreal-based Young Galaxy has been experimenting with their synth-heavy dream-pop over the course of the last three albums, and their latest record, “Ultramarine,” definitely takes on various different shades and rhythms. Some tracks are perfectly accessible and sun-kissed (“Pretty Boy”), others are Ibiza contenders (“Fall For You”) and some are even surprisingly ominous (“In Fire”). The general layer of Young Galaxy’s latest Dan Lissvik-produced album actually sparkles and bounces, although their music videos they’ve released in support of this album have involved the opposite. “Pretty Boy” was downright creepy and now “New Summer” gets a slow-motion apocalyptic treatment in the Ivan Grbovic-directed video. A mini-disaster film thanks to Grbovic’s team of special effects engineers, “Hey, it’s a new summer / Can we live like it’s our last one?” sound a bit eerie coming from lead vocalist Catherine McCandless. The Polaris Music Prize-shortlisted “Ultramarine” is out now via Paper Bag Records.
