Actor/producer/songwriter/bearded guy Adam Goldberg first displayed his affection for vintage pop under the name LANDy in 2009, issuing a collection of songs and sonic explorations that he had tinkered with over the years and eventually assembled with the help of Earlimart’s Aaron Espinoza. Two years later he renamed his musical project the Goldberg Sisters; of course, there were no sisters involved, and only Goldberg’s therapist knows the real story behind his mythical twin Celeste, who appears prominently in the Goldberg Sisters’ press releases but nowhere else. The songs on the “band’s” self-titled album – and, likely, the follow-up coming on Aug. 20, “Stranger’s Morning” – are odd and oddly compelling, as if Goldberg is trying to release his inner John Lennon along with Celeste. Melodies, vocals, instrumentation, effects: Everything here is refracted, as if Goldberg is viewing the world through a bubble, and maybe positing the argument that viewing the world is safer that way. He may not be the king of pop, but as the video for “Stranger’s Morning” attests, Goldberg is quite possibly the king of Vine. The whole video is composed of stitched-together Vine clips.
